The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths on Thursday arrested a deputy secretary working with the state home department for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs5,000 to clear a file of a person who had been selected as police constable. The official, Sanjay Khedekar, was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe outside the Mantralaya gate.

According to sources, the complainant, a 49-year-old man, approached the ACB alleging that Khedekar demanded Rs10,000 from him to clear the file of his son. "The candidate was selected in 2014 but there was a case against him under section 325 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for voluntarily causing hurt. He was eventually acquitted," said an official. The home department also looks after the police recruitment.

"After Khedekar made the demand, the complainant approached the ACB. We verified his claims and laid a trap. Following negotiation with the complainant, Khedekar agreed to take just Rs5,000. He was arrested from outside the Mantralaya gate red-handed," said an ACB officer.

The arrest comes days after a "personal aide" of state revenue minister, Eknath Khadse, was arrested for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs30 crore in a land allotment case. Khadse's "PA" Gajanan Patil was arrested for demanding a bribe from economist Ramesh Jadhav to transfer a piece of land at Nilje village in Kalyan to the complainant to set up an educational institution.

Khadse had later said Jadhav had a "tendency" to level corruption charges and that he would file a defamation suit against him for "maligning" his image.
