A special anti-corruption court on Wednesday rejected the bail application filed by Gajanan Patil, an acquaintance of revenue minister Eknath Khadse, who was arrested for allegedly demanding and accepting bribe of Rs1 crore from a doctor.

Patil has sought bail on the ground that investigations are being carried out by the agency for over nine months now and presently there is no requirement of him in custody for further probe. However, public prosecutor JV Desai argued before the court, "There was no political rivalry being settled as alleged in the case and Patil's arrest was made only after thorough investigation."

Desai also argued that the ACB has substantial evidence, but since the arrest the accused has not been cooperating in the investigations and thus custodial interrogation is required. Moreover, he added, investigations are at a crucial stage and his release could hamper the probe as there are chances of him tampering with the evidence.

The prosecution also argued that the very fact that an application of the complainant, Dr Ramesh Jadhav, for allotment of a plot was rejected various times earlier was known to the accused and yet "he tried to take advantage of the same, this shows the intent of the accused".

The court was also told by the prosecution that the ACB is probing links of the accused with other people and trying to ascertain who all could benefit from the transaction, for which Patil's questioning would be required, and thus, he should not be released on bail.
