Abortions by under-15 girls rises by 67% in Mumbai

Of the 31,000 women who opted for Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP), 1600 were below the age of 19 years.

Mumbai has recorded an alarming 67% rise in abortions among teenage girls under the age of 15 years in 2014-2015, an English daily reported. According to data accessed through an RTI application, of the nearly 31,000 women who opted for Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP), 1,600 were below the age of 19 years.

The trend has brought back the debate to have better sex education in schools and junior colleges. According to the report, the BMC data collated from all the licenced MTPs centred in Mumbai showed that in 2013-2014 , 111 girls had undergone an abortion under the age of 15. These numbers have risen to 185 in 2014-15. For the age bracket of 15-19 years, there has been a 47% rise in abortions when compared with the last year.

Within the city, Andheri east and west emerged as the main abortion centres, reporting nearly 6,000 cases while Chembur came next with nearly 3,000 cases. About 1800 to 2,000 MTPs were also reported to have been performed in certain central Mumbai wards such as Dadar and Parel.
