Come 2011 and you may be able to ride on the first corridor of the prestigious Mumbai Metro that will be made operational between Versova, Andheri, and Ghatkopar.

The contract for the first corridor between Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar (VAG) was awarded to ABB on Thursday, which will now be responsible for the supply, installation, testing and commissioning of traction electrification, power supply, power distribution, and SCADA system for this section.

“ABB is the company which completed and commissioned similar work for the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and is working on the second phase of the project,” said KP Maheshwari, director of Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL).

Similarly, the work of signalling and train control systems for VAG corridor has been entrusted with Siemens, and the contract for cable stay bridge over the Western Express Highway and two other cantilever bridges over Andheri and Mithi River has been awarded to SEW Constructions Limited.

“The project is moving ahead and we have completed several activities much ahead of schedule and hope to complete the project within 30 months,” Maheshwari said.

MMOPL is the first public private partnership initiative for the Mass Rapid Transit System project in India for the VAG corridor of Mumbai Metro.
