Sensing potential security threat and complaining of a lack of space in the space-starved city, the residents of the Mantralaya area have complained to police about abandoned vehicles in their neighbourhood. The residents have written to the police asking them to tow away vehicles that have been lying there unattended for months.

The letter addressed to the deputy commissioner of police (zone 1) and to the commissioner of police, also suggests that cars should not be allowed to remain parked beyond a certain period time. "The area is a high-profile zone. YB Chavan Centre is situated on the opposite lane, which is frequented by dignitaries and VIPs. The Mantralay building is right across the road. Keeping all of this in mind, we believe that abandoned cars should not be allowed for very long," said Shiv Kanodia, resident of Ameeta Building, who wrote the letter.

The residents have listed out five vehicles already, which have been around for months. A sheet of dust has collected on them and they have flat tyres, too. The three buildings in the vicinity where the deserted cars are parked are expected to respond soon. "These scraps can be misused as potential explosives, for storing narcotics and other hazardous substances, besides also creating a space constraint in the area. Also, when foreign dignitaries visit the city, they look rather uncouth," added Kanodia.

"Since these cars are not in the name of any of the society members, we feel they should be removed at the soonest, because they eat up our parking space as well," said Rohit Gupta, another resident.

The residents have suggested the police to tow all cars that do not have residents' stickers that are parked for more than 10 hours, except on Sundays or public holidays. Manoj Kumar Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 1, was unavailable for a comment.
