Over 200 citizens including local residents of Aarey milk colony, activists, environmentalists gathered at Aarey colony to register a police complaint against Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) on Wednesday morning, for allegedly carrying out work, despite assuring the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that no work on the ground will be carried out till the final hearing.

The citizens were surprised to see heavy police deployment and barricades set up and that the cops did not register a First Information Report (FIR) but only took a complaint letter submitted by the environmentalists stating that they will consult the legal cell and necessitate further action.

“MMRC had assured the NGT on September 13 that it will not carry out any work on the ground, on the 30-hectare plot, where the Metro car shed has been proposed till the final hearing, but it was openly violating the NGT order by starting to carry out landfilling, destruction of the landscape,” shared Stalin D, Director, Projects, Vanashakti.

According to Biju Augustine, volunteer of Aarey Conservation Group (ACG), “We will wait till this week and if we find that the police is taking no action we will initiate a major protest campaign,” he added.
