The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday removed Maruti Bhapkar from the post of zonal convenorship. The party took the decision after its state executive committee meeting held in Pune, where Bhapkar was present.

"You can call it a suo moto decision of the state unit because the party did not get any decision from the centre. We have to answer to our volunteers. They are trying to wean away volunteers to Swaraj Samwad and, hence, we had to take this decision. Bhapkar was present in the meeting and he said he would want to continue with the Swaraj Samwad Abhiyan. We then decided...," said Meena Karnik, the party's media cell in-charge.

The Pune meeting was attended by Subhash Ware, convenor of the party in the state, along with members Raju Bhise, Abha Mulay, Subhash Lomte, Farukh Ravi Srivastav, Sundar Balakrishnan Susma Maurya and two invitees Akshay Marathe and Nandu Marathe.

"The decision is only with respect to office-bearers and those holding posts," said Karnik. Bhapkar continues to be a party member, as does Sanjeev Sane and Shakil Ahmed. However, Manav Kamble has quit both party and post.

"The party is against the ideal it stood for. Hence, I decided to quit," said Kamble who was in-charge of the frontal organisation.

"I am founder-member of the party. During the time the party was formed, they talked about Swaraj, democracy and other things. On March 28, I was upset with the way things went about. I won't quit the party, they can remove me if they want to," said Bhapkar. He and some others are likely to have a meeting in Thane on Thursday about the same.

When asked about the decision on primary membership, the party said it cannot be taken now. "How can we remove him from the primary membership? Many people have attended Swaraj Samwad. We will have to take action against all. But an office-bearer cannot be part of any such meeting that looks to form a parallel front," said Abha Mulay, secretary of the party in state.
