Aadhar centres to dwindle next year, hurry up!

If you have not enrolled for your Aadhaar card yet, then make sure you get it done soon. Because with the falling number of footfalls, the Aadhar registration centres will be gradually reduced from the next year. As and when over 90 per cent of Maharashtra’s population gets the card, the state government is planning to pitch it as a cornerstone for any welfare scheme or subsidy.

Officials from the state information technology (IT) department said that as Aadhaar enrollment reaches comfortable levels across the state, footfalls at registration centres will fall and private operators will move these centres out from March onwards.  

However, the government has plans to establish around 2,000 permanent enrollment centres across Maharashtra, of which 500 are already functioning. These centres are catering to new enrollments. The remaining 1,500 will be in place by March 2014 and they will be operated by citizen service centre operators across the state.  By October end, Maharashtra had around 3,822 active machines at about 1,805 centres, down from 4,300 machines during the peak times.
Around 8 crore of the state’s 11.23 crore population (as per 2011 census) has registered for Aadhaar and about 7.36 crore cards have been issued. 

State IT secretary Rajesh Aggarwal said they planned to reach enrollment levels of around 90 per cent by December end, after which private operators would find it tougher to get people to enroll.
