More than a year after a mentally-challenged minor girl was raped in Malwani, DNA tests helped the police arrate the accused on Monday.

The accused, Mohammed Siraj Khan, a rickshaw driver, had taken advantage of her condition and raped her inside his auto last year.

In September 2012, the girl’s parents found out that she was five-month pregnant and despite repeated questioning, the 15-year-old girl could not recollect or describe who raped her.

According to police, the girl is mentally unstable and polio afflicted. The incident happened in April 2012 when the girl had stepped out of her home in Malwani. Her father worked as a repairman.

“After her parents realised that she was pregnant, they lodged a complaint with the Malwani police in September 2012. The girl had no inkling of what happened with her due to her condition. So, we decided to carry out the investigations from other angles,” said Mahesh Patil, DCP (Zone 11).

The police took the DNA samples of the girl. In January, the girl gave birth to a baby boy who died a few weeks later. “We took the DNA samples of the baby also. Initially, we rounded up about 100 people from the neighbourhood where the girl used to frequent, and after questioning them, we narrowed down on six. All of them were subjected to a DNA test,” added Patil.

After the forensic reports revealed that Khan’s DNA matched that of the child, he was arrested on Monday. The accused has been booked under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. Khan has been remanded in police custody till October 19.
