Malin

  • No of dead so far: 63
  • Total houses: 67
  • Houses destroyed: 47

From Narmada Zanjare, who lost 20 of her relatives, to Kiwji Vithbud, whose wife had lost her brother and family, relatives are pouring in to Malin, hoping that they would get to see the bodies of their kin.

Zanjare has been coming to Malin for the last three days. She has lost 20 of her relatives -- including her three brothers and their families. But she has not been lucky so far.

“I never thought my full family would be destroyed... I am helplessly going from one officer to another. Yesterday, the police did not let us to the spot. Today, I am going there to check again,” she said.
Then there are also people like Sandip, who dramatically escaped the disaster because of a cup of tea.

The toll in the landslide at Malin, near Pune on Wednesday, has hit 63 so far. The dead were mostly women and children as the male folk had gone to the nearby hills to feed animals.

Dadabhau Pote is glad he no longer lives in Malin. “It's scary to even think what would have happened had I not shifted to Pune years back. I have nearly stopped coming here after my parents’ death two years back. If it wasn’t for my desire to go for higher education and earn good money, my friends would have come here to see me under the debris here!”

Manda Zambre feels lucky as her husband dramatically escaped the disaster. “My husband, Sandip, had gone for sowing rice in the field early morning. He was returning home around 7 that morning – the same time disaster struck. Thankfully, one of his friends insisted that the two have tea together. He now calls himself a fortunate one who narrowly escaped death because of a tea.”

Kiwji Vithbud, who lives in the adjacent village, says his wife was shocked to see her brother’s house crushed in the landslide. “The village is completely unrecognisable. My wife lost the entire family from her mother’s side. Only our 12-year-old nephew is alive, because he had gone to his uncle’s place for a day. We cannot dare to bring him back now. What are we going to tell him? Where are his parents and brothers?”
