The A-ward (Colaba-Churchgate) residents now seem to welcome the pay-and-park policy proposed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The policy was proposed in 2015, however, after a lot of hue and cry from the residents and their associations, there was a stay on it by the state government. After the stay was lifted last month, the A-ward department has received over 54 applications for parking spots in the city.

According to an official, the move was made to encourage the use of public transport as well as hassle-free parking in the city. The BMC has been trying to implement this policy since 2006, however, it failed several times due to resistance from the residents.

The policy is divided into several parts which have special provisions for residents, schools, public places, as well as office premises. Residents and societies can purchase each parking spot for approximately Rs 2,000 per month, and this provision is valid from 8 pm to 8 am. Spots outside commercial buildings can also be purchased for the same price. However, one cannot park his/her vehicle within 100 meters of a school; those spots will be allotted only to school buses.

On the one hand, the A-ward has already started implementing the policy on a few roads in Colaba. Kiran Dighavkar, assistant municipal commissioner, A-ward said, "The A-ward already has 54 applications claiming parking spaces in their vicinity. Those include parking spots like those outside Shaheed Bhagat Singh Road, Sadhu Vasvani Road, Sasoon Dock, Maker Tower, and Nariman Point."

Dighavkar added, "In the past few weeks, we have had meetings with the associations and Advance Locality Managements to explain the policy to them."
