The city is all set to host the Cool Japan Festival at High Street Phoenix in Lower Parel this weekend. The event aims to capture the essence of both entertainment and business exchange between Japan and India.

Only in the past three years has Japanese food become affordable to the average middle-class Indian. Before this, Wasabi, located in the Taj Mahal Palace at Apollo Bunder, was the only authentic Japanese restaurant in Mumbai. There have been a few restaurants such as Joss in South Mumbai that serves Asian food, but people would generally associate traditional Japanese food with the restaurant Wasabi. "Wasabi is a lovely place. It should be visited on special occasions (a meal for two costs approximately Rs. 10,000," said newly appointed Japanese Consul General Yoshiaki Ito at an event recently.
The Cool Japanese Festival was primarily launched to give Mumbaikars a feel of Japanese cuisine, Japanese products and the country's rich culture. According to the organisers, the exhibitors will get first-hand experience of presenting their products and brands to the visitors. They will also get an opportunity to hear customer feedback while testing their sales. "I wish Mumbaikars will enjoy all these activities and I am sure Cool Japan Festival 2015 will further strengthen and cement the ties of friendship between India and Japan," added Ito.

In addition to the above, visitors will get to enjoy the beauty of Japanese cultural performances on stage. Apart from music performances, there will also be a martial arts performance, a group of drummers and even a group of illustrators specialising in anime. This year, the festival is all about Japan tourism—more and more brands from Japan with exciting Japanese food will add to the celebrations at the Courtyard of High Street Phoenix, Lower Parel.
Like every year, one of the main attractions remains the Japanese street food festival, Washoku, offering a taste of Japan with authentic delicacies like Sushi, Yakitori Chicken Skewers and Gyozas for Rs. 150 each. "This year our theme is 'Travel to Japan' where visitors will be able to experience Japan closer than ever before, right here in Mumbai," commented Hakuei Kosato, Director of Maido Enterprises Pvt. Ltd., the company that is organising Cool Japan Festival.

In 2014, over 1,00,000 people thronged the three-day festival to enjoy artists and bands, including popular Enka singer, Sarbjit Singh Chadha; Japanese pop band, Prizmmy; and Tenko, a Japanese Taiko drum group.
