Four cases of suicides were reported in the north-western suburb on Sunday. While two incidents were reported in Samta Nagar, Kandivli, the other two were from Khar and Borivli.

In the first incident,  35-year-old maid had committed suicide in the servant quarters in Khar early on Sunday morning. “Around 6.30am, we were informed that a woman, identified as Devyani, had committed suicide by hanging. She worked as a domestic help at the residence of 63-year-old businessman Deepak Vaghani,” said an officer from the Khar police station. He added that the body has been sent to the hospital for post-mortem and investigation is on to ascertain the exact cause of death.

In the second case, 30-year-old Suresh Ranbir Lot, a cleaner, hung himself using a dupatta. He was staying with his wife and two children at Valmiki Chawl in the Hanuman Nagar, Kandivli.

Suresh was addicted to alcohol and this led to a quarrel between the couple, police said.

On Sunday around 12.30pm, when Suresh was alone at home, he hung himself. His brother took him to Bhagwati Hospital where he was declared dead. The Samta Nagar police have recorded statements of Suresh’s brother and relatives. Suresh was believed to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, sources said.

Another suicide case was registered from Kandivli involving 35-year-old Ramesh Sakharam Bamgude, a resident of Poisar. Ramesh was an alcoholic and his wife was living with her parents in Ghatkopar along with their child. Ramesh was staying with his mother, the police said.

On Friday, Ramesh had an argument with his mother and went to the loft of his house to sleep.

Next day, his mother assumed that Ramesh had left for work. When Ramesh didn’t return home, she went to the loft to check and found his body hanging from the ceiling, the police said. She then reported the matter to the Samta Nagar police station on Sunday. “We suspect that Ramesh committed suicide on Friday night. His body has been sent to Bhagwati Hospital for post-mortem and a case of an accidental death has been registered,” said an officer from the station.

In the fourth case, 22-year-old Rukmini Venkatesh Harawat, a resident of Gorai ended her life by pouring kerosene on self and setting herself ablaze. “Around 10.15pm, when Rukmini, a labourer, was alone at home when she committed suicide. She sustained 100% burns and died on the spot. Domestic reasons could be the cause due to which she would have ended her life. Her body was sent to Shatabdi Hospital for post-mortem,” said senior police inspector Narayan Khaire of the Borivli police station.
