In order to take forward the state government's decision to review as well as follow up the approved and pending central infrastructural projects allocated to the state, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has appointed Lokesh Chandra as the investment and protocol officer in Delhi.

According to a state government circular, he will be based at Maharashtra Sadan in Delhi, and will follow up the progress of the ongoing work as well as status of various Maharashtra projects stuck in central government departments. His full-time job will be to pursue the files concerned and give the state feedback on a daily basis.

Earlier, there were no such nodal officer. And unless and until officers in the state cadre went to Delhi, files connected to central projects in Maharashtra would never move from one department to another. This used to result in approvals for projects getting delayed, and thereby their execution.

"This nodal officer will do facilitation job between departments in the state and central governments," the circular states.

Sources in the government told dna that prime minister Narendra Modi wanted to put projects in a fast-track mode. Therefore, in the central cabinet meeting, it was decided that Maharashtra should appoint an IAS-level nodal officer to pursue pending projects.

"The nodal officer will resolve any issue pertaining to any department. He will be a one-point person for getting projects approved. All new and pending projects would be registered with the central E-Scrutiny. By tracking this site, both the governments can understand the status of projects," source added.

Pankaj Joshi, executive director, Urban Design Research Institute, welcomed the decision. "It's really a welcome change. In the absence of such an officer, the state was suffering. I hope by appointing this officer, Maharashtra would be able to execute many big infrastructural projects in the near future," Joshi added.
