After a six-year-old girl was allegedly raped at a school last week in Bangalore, parents here have raised their concerns about the safety of their children. In order to sensitize schools over sexual abuse, the deputy director (educatsion), has decided to carry out awareness programme in Pune, Solapur and Ahmednagar districts.

"We have decided to oraganise a session and discuss the sensitivity of this issue with principals and school authorities," said Suman Shinde, the deputy director (education)

Shinde said the program has been named 'Commitment to Stop Child Abuse' and under this, the principals will be trained with the help of NGOs that work for child protection from sexual offence cases.

Shinde added that since it's not possible for the education department to go and sensitize each and every school, they have decided to enrol NGOs so that they can conduct workshops at the district and taluka levels.

"We appeal to the NGOs to come forward and register themselves with us," she said.

Nusarat Khan of Cactus Foundation, the NGO which has been working with education department in creating awareness programme in schools, said that their NGO has already volunteered.

Khan, however, said that it's not only schools, principals, who need to be made aware but also parents, who often remain tight lipped in such cases.

If you are interested in joining the programme, send in your applications to the deputy director office before July 31 or email it to dydpune@gmail.com
