The Worli police have arrested two people, including a courier delivery boy, of a gang of four for their involvement in a credit card fraud racket. Officers have also come across a unique modus operandi used by the gang.

Sources said the data on the credit cards, meant to be delivered to customers through couriers, was stolen before the delivery of the cards. The arrested two have allegedly admitted that the gang has stolen data of six cards till date and done shopping worth lakhs of rupees, sources added. The police are on the lookout for two more gang members.

The arrested duo has been identified as Abrar Anwar Khan, 24, and Khalil Akhtar Ansari, 30.
According to the police, Khan works as a courier delivery boy in a reputed company, which delivers couriers from Worli to Nariman Point. The complainant in the case is the courier company’s operational manager.

A police officer said, “Khan was taken into confidence by Ansari, a Nagpada resident, and two of his associates. Khan would bring the sealed envelopes containing the credit cards to Ansari and his associates. They would cleverly open these envelopes, steal the data and reseal the envelopes after putting the cards back in them. For each courier, the trio paid Khan Rs2,000.”

Police investigation has revealed that the data of the six credit cards was stolen between September 2 and 21 using this modus operandi. The gang has already shopped for goods worth Rs3.23 lakh using five of those cards, the police said.

The officer said, “One of the customers had recently made inquiries with the bank saying he never did any transaction using his new credit card and yet received a bill for the same. The bank then got in touch with the courier company and their internal inquiry revealed that Khan was involved in this nefarious activity. The courier firm then lodged a police complaint under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act. While Khan was picked up on Saturday, Ansari was arrested on Sunday.”
