As part of its road safety initiative, the Mumbai traffic police have launched an awareness programme, 'Safe Drives Save Lives', for chauffeurs and drivers.

The objective of this drive is to sensitise drivers on various aspects of driving and road behaviour.

The programme is to be held at Bandra-Kurla Complex police station conference room. It will be two-hour sessions conducted between 10am & 12noon; 1.30pm & 3.30pm and 4pm & 6pm from July 14 to July 18.

It intends to provide advanced training to chauffeur and drivers that aims at inculcating 'quality service and safety first' culture among them.

Specially designed simulators will be used to first test the driving skills of those taking part, following which the positive and negative points in their performance would be pointed out.

It's an advanced programme, and the topics covered will be safety, compliance, personal grooming and road etiquette, defensive driving, handling road rage, controlled usage of horn, and managing the elderly, differently-abled and the young.

The training session would be divided into six parts—compliance & documentation, technical knowledge, behaviour & attitude, health & safety, self-development & exceptional circumstances.

Dr. BK Upadhyay, joint commissioner of police (traffic), said: "Most drivers have inadequate skills. The use of simulator will help them identify their flaws that they cannot correct in normal circumstances. We appeal to all those who have drivers to send them for this programme which is free of cost."
