The Rahata police have registered a case of rape of a 93-year-old woman who lives alone by the roadside in Puntamba, a village in Ahmednagar district.
According to the police, the woman was beaten, sexually abused and robbed by unknown persons on the night of August 19. She was found in a semi-conscious state by the police who took her to the Pravara Medical College Hospital.
“The woman lives by herself on what people give her in the form of money or food. She was robbed of about Rs2,000 and a nose ring,” a police officer said. The offenders have been booked under Sections 394 (assault) and 376 (sexual abuse including rape) of IPC.
“On the basis of medical reports, a case of rape has been registered. Since the woman is not in a sound condition at present, the statements given by her from time to time vary.
We are investigating the case. She has been sent to Snehalaya for care,” said RD Shinde, SP, Ahemednagar.
The medical tests confirmed that she was sexually abused.
Project Snehadhar, run by NGO Snehalaya, is taking care of her at present and Mauli Seva Pratishthan, a medical institution run by Dr Rajendra Dhamne, is catering to her medical needs.
Girish Kulkarni of Snehalaya said: “The woman stays by the roadside. Her husband is dead and she has no children.”
