A newborn weighing 900 grams was saved after doctors performed a life-saving corrective heart surgery in Thane’s Jupiter Hospital.

One-month-old Shiv Mohanlal was born on February 7 with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), a congenital heart condition that affects blood flow in the heart.

Born to Silvassa-based immigrant labourers 17 years after their marriage, Shiv happens to be the smallest baby  in India to undergo PDA device closure — as the surgery is called — doctors claim.

Shiv was born 12 weeks prematurely and weighed only one kg during the time of delivery.

He was kept in the neonatal intensive care unit, but he nevertheless started losing weight due to the heart disease. Dr Srinivas L, the paediatric cardiologist who performed the surgery, said, “The baby was dependent on oxygen. The medication to treat PDA had not worked. The surgery was performed on February 28. The heart defect was closed using a highly specialised implant called PDA device. The implant was inserted through baby’s thighs, to avoid an open chest surgery. Shiv has now started gaining weight.”

Shiv is now recovering in the NICU unit. Genesis Foundation helped foot the medical bill by donating Rs 1.45 lakh.

“Since the baby is premature, the mechanism of closure of the PDA hole in the heart is not developed yet. Having the hole is a life-threatening problem. About 50 per cent of the infants born prematurely can have this problem. In the majority of the cases, it can be managed by medicines, but very rarely, say one to two per cent cases, would require a surgery for survival.”
