A 9-year-old girl drowned in the swimming pool of a posh Kalyan complex on Sunday leading to the arrest of the lifeguard for causing death due to negligence.

When the incident took place, around 15 people were there in the pool and cops suspect that the girl accidentally slipped where water entered her nose, leading to her death.

According to police, the deceased — identified as Drishti Singh, a resident of Rosalie Complex in Khadakpada of Kalyan — went into the swimming pool at around 11.20 am when around 10-15 residents were inside the pool. Surprisingly, no one noticed that she was drowning. Her father, Jaswant Singh, a 39-year-old businessman, alleged negligence on part of the lifeguard Hemant Raut.

"The father of the girl has lodged a complaint that the girl died due to negligence of the lifeguard. We have taken the guard into custody," said a police official.

"We suspect that the girl lost her balance and slipped into the deeper section of the pool," said a police official. We have registered the case under section 304(A) (causing death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code and are further investigating the case," said PRO Thane police department Sukhada Narkar.
