The Andheri railway police confiscated nine pigeons stuffed in paper envelopes from a youth travelling on a Jogeshwari-bound local on Tuesday. The 21-year-old had bought them from Crawford market. A non-cognisable complaint has been lodged under relevant sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

According to the complaint, a person by the name of Damodar Bharti, noticed the youth, identified as Khaleel Uddin Mehndi Hassan, carrying a blue plastic packet with 9 envelopes on the Jogeshwari-bound local. "Bharti asked the youth what was in the bag, and was told that it had pigeons. After getting off the train, he brought it to the notice of the railway police. The youth told us he bought them to keep as pets," said assistant inspector G B Bankar of Andheri railway police.

The police then contacted Shakuntala Mazumdar of Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), Thane. "I got a call from the CST railway police that 9 pigeons had been confiscated at Andheri. I was asked what sections need to be applied in the case, which I provided them. Then, we arranged for the pigeons to be rescued," Mazumdar told dna.

Vivek Shetia and Utsav Maru, members of RAWW (Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare), rushed to Andheri railway police station in the evening. "The pigeons were stuffed in paper envelopes which were stapled shut. The envelopes were in a big blue packet. We took the birds to Thane SPCA for a preliminary check-up to ensure that they were healthy before they are released," Shetia told dna.

A non-cognisable complaint has been lodged under sections 1d (carrying animal in such a manner or position as to subject it to unnecessary pain or suffering) and 1e (keeps or confines any animal in cage or other receptacle which does not measure sufficiently in height, length and breadth to permit the animal reasonable opportunity for movement) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
