An octogenarian has donated Rs1 crore to Nana Palkar Smruti Samiti (NPSS), an NGO that provides medical services to poor patients, dedicating the money to the memory of his grandson, who died in an accident.

Pratap Bhate is the 87-year-old man who made the generous donation.

NPSS president Dr Harshad Punjani said: "It is one of the most memorable days in the history of NPSS. This amount will be utilised for the maintenance of rooms on the 10th floor of our building where patients and their relatives are put up. We have expressed our gratitude to the family by naming the 10th floor in the memory of the late Bhupesh Vinod Bhate (Pratap Bhate's grandson)."

Sudheendra Kulkarni, the chairman of Observer Research Foundation and Bhate's son-in-law, said: "It is an honour that the NGO has decided to name the 10th floor in Bhupesh's memory. We will continue to support this NGO, which has been doing remarkable work in offering medical services to poor patients."

The medical services that NPSS offers include dialysis at Rs350, pathology services at nominal rates and free stay and food for needy patients admitted to KEM hospital, Tata Memorial Hospital and Wadia Hospital.

"Our dream is to ensure that each and every patient coming to Mumbai for treatment gets quality food, staying facilities and medicines," Punjani said.

The event at which the 10th floor of the building was named after Bhate's grandson was graced by Maharashtra Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao, who appreciated the family's generous contribution. "The time has arrived when we need to have 'independent social responsibility', apart from corporate social responsibility, and the Bhate family has set an example for the same," he said.

He added that the state needs more public hospitals and cancer hospitals.

Sanjay Deshmukh, the BMC's additional municipal commissioner, Dr Avinash Supe, the civic body's director of major hospitals and Dr Rajendra Badwe, director, Tata Memorial Hospital were some other dignitaries present at the event.
