Despite taking measures for doctors, who are selected to take up their rural postings, 81 doctors have not reported to duty in rural areas. These doctors are appointed as medical officers in different parts of Maharashtra. As a result, state health department has terminated their appointment as it's proves that doctors are not really keen to work in rural areas.

Two months ago, the state health department had undertaken a huge drive to fill up vacant posts for doctors across the state in civil hospitals. To ensure that doctors, who are selected through Maharashtra Public Service MPSC, take up their rural postings, the state health department has for the first time, begun appointing them after counselling them about their choice of rural postings.

It is known that most doctors do not want to go for rural service. Medical students too feel similiarly.

While joining medical courses like MBBS/PG/Diploma in state and civic-run medical colleges, students have to sign a bond saying they will serve in a rural area for one year after completing MBBS, or pay Rs20 lakh and for PG/Diploma they will have to pay Rs50 lakh fine.

"We really don't know the reason for them not joining duty. We waited for them for one month. When we realised that they are not keen on joining duty then we decided to terminate their appointment. We want to give chances to other people. This time while joining the rural posting, we were offering choice according to their merit list number but still some of the people have not joined. What can we can do, everybody has their own problems," said Dr Satish Pawar, director, directorate of health services.

He said, "Our recruitment drive was successful, we fill up maximum vacant seats in different part sof the state."

It is a long pending demand from the health activists, social workers and public representatives to fill up the vacant doctors' posts in rural areas. State health department regularly issues advertisements for filling up of the vacant posts in rural areas. They selected the doctors through MPSC.

Dr Jayesh Lele, Secretary, Indian Medical Association (Maharashtra), he said, "While offering a job in rural areas, the government should also think about their family and living conditions in these areas. After taking up the offer from the health department, doctors may realise that the working conditions are not good so they refuse to join duty.
