The city's Repair and Reconstruction Board of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has claimed that it has repaired over 800 cessed buildings in the last one year. Further, the claim suggests that all of these buildings are located in South Mumbai.

Earlier, the MHADA had come up with the list of the seven most dilapidated buildings in the island city.

A senior MHADA official said, "800 buildings have been repaired in one year that needed 10, 20 or up to 50 per cent repair."

Last year, the MHADA had received a lot of flak after the Hussain building in Bhendi Bazaar came crashing down, killing 22 and injuring several others. Since then, MHADA has upped its ante against any illegal buildings in the city.

Once the buildings are repaired, their life increases by at least two to three years. Repair work is mostly carried out in the dangerous part of the building by either demolishing the part or giving additional support to it through propping.

"The buildings which are beyond repair are declared as the most dangerous to reside and tenants of these buildings are vacated and sent to transit camps," said the official.

The first building on the list of the most dangerous is the Esplanade Mansion, located close to the sessions court. The other six buildings include — building number 208-220 (Kazi Sayyed Street), building number 101-11 (Bara Imam Road), building number 30-32 (2nd Sutar Gulli), building number 69-81 (Khetwadi), building number 39 (Chowpatty Sea face), building number 46-50 (Lucky mansion Claire Road).

There are more than 14,283 cessed building in the city, of which 12,029 buildings are in the A category. Considering the danger involved in these buildings, a 24 hour control room has also been set up by MHADA at Tardeo.
