The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has completed around 80 per cent work on creating 15-digit unique identification number (UIN) for each house under its jurisdiction. The necessary changes have been made in the software to align the unique number with all citizen-centric services, said a senior civic official.

At present, the civic body is scanning all documents of the houses, so that they can be accessed by the UIN. "We have been issuing 15-digit UIN to each house in the city and we expect that the work will be complete soon. After this, services like paying property tax or water bill can be done by just using the unique number at the Citizen Facilitation Centres," said the official.

According to the civic official, the unique number will also help avail details of a building, such as the clearance of taxes, bills, etc. "Once the process is complete, documents will no longer require manual handling," said the official.

Additionally, the numbers will also mitigate any chance of confusion between building names. The official said that there are several buildings in the ward bearing the same names, which creates confusion at times. "The biggest problem it solves is a duplication of names," said the official. The BMC had begun the process of creating UINs for the city's buildings last year.

BMC's plan works on the lines of unique Aadhaar numbers that every Indian citizen has. The official said that the numbers will be derived from the 15-digit Section Account Code (SAC) of a Property Tax receipt of a particular building. These codes are unique to each building and cannot be repeated.

"After the unique numbers come into effect, residents will not have to provide different consumer numbers for paying property tax or water bill or registering any complaint," said the official.
