8-yr-old's painting wins himInternational award

Niranjan J Menon, a class III student of DAV Public School, New Panvel, made the city proud by winning the 4th Kao International Environment Painting Contest for Children conducted by Kao Corporation, Tokyo in Japan.

The theme of the painting competition was ‘Eco-Together’ and more than 8,000 children from 49 countries participated.

Eight-year-old Menon, who is learning how to paint at Bankim Memorial Child Art Centre (BMCAC) in Vashi, through his drawing showed himself as flying high to restore the ozone layer to protect the Mother Earth and her children, on a magic carpet, and dreaming to go all the nook and corners of the Earth to get the environment set right.

Menon’s painting was among the 24 other paintings which got recognition by the organsier. His painting was selected among the best in eco-friend prize category.

“There were three categories for entry in the painting competition — Eco-together-Planet Earth Grand Prix, Eco together-Kao Prize and Eco Friend Prize,” said P V Jaykumar, Menon’s father.
Jaykumar added that a total 24 children’s painting were selected under the ‘Eco Friend Prize’ category and Menon’s painting was among them. Menon is the only winner from India.

“Throughout I was encouraged by my parents and coaching class,” said Menon. Menon got to know about the painting competition at BMCAC. “Niranjan has a little interest in paintings and he also takes classes at BMCAC. At the coaching class, he got to know about the competition,” said Jaykumar.

He added, “The whole painting was his own imagination and it has brought laurels for us and his coaching class. The theme of the competition was what we can do in our daily life to protect the global environment and strive to create a world in the future where people can live every day in happiness and rejoice.”

There were 8,516 entries from 49 countries in the eco-friendly category. After strict screening by the eminent panel of six jury members, 24 eco-friendly prizes were selected, and Menon won the prize.

Menon has received a certificate of merit in the 42nd world school children’s art exhibition of Republic of China.

In all, there were 30,000 entries from 60 countries, conducted by Young Envoys International in Hyderabad.

In January 2013, Menon won a prize in his outstanding performance in the international children painting competition held at Hong Kong.
