8-year-old on her way to school killed by speeding dumper in Deonar

An 8-year-old girl died after the motorbike on which she was riding pillion was hit allegedly by a speeding dumper in Deonar on Thursday. The driver was later arrested.

An 8-year-old girl died after the motorbike on which she was riding pillion was hit allegedly by a speeding dumper in Deonar on Thursday. The driver was later arrested.

Zoya Shaikh was on her way to school in Govandi when the mishap took place around 7.25 am at Bainganwadi signal on the Mankhurd-Ghatkopar Link Road, said Deonar police. Her father Wasib Shaikh was riding the bike.

"A dumper bearing registration number MH-05-AM-0623 was going from Mankhurd towards Ghatkopar. When Shaikh tried to cross the road, the truck rammed into his bike, throwing the two off the two-wheeler," said an officer from Deonar police station.

The officer said Zoya sustained grievous injuries on her head while Shaikh fractured his left hand and suffered injuries on his back."

The driver of the dumper stopped for a brief moment, but soon sped away from the mishap site. Shaikh and Zoya were taken to Rajawadi Hospital where doctors declared the child dead post admission.

"A few passersby had noted down the number of the truck and on the basis of it, we arrested the driver Eknath Kamble from Ghatkopar," added the officer.

The Deonar police have booked Kamble for causing death due to negligence, and rash driving along with relevant sections of Motor Vehicle Act.
