The Mumbai police department has claimed to have become the first police department in the country to appoint the highest number of female police officers who are in-charge of police stations across the city. Eight female senior inspectors have been appointed, the highest in any police department in the country.

On Saturday, the Mumbai police tweeted, "Trying to keep up with the city's trend of setting examples #InspiredByMumbai" along with a picture of the eight female police officers. Alka Mandave has been holding charge of Airport police station, Rashmi Jadhav for Cuffe Parade police station, Mrudula Lad for Sion police station, Lata Shirsat at Sahar, Jyotsna Rasam at Vanrai, Rohini Kale for Pantnagar police station and Vidhyalaxmi Hiremath for Aarey police station and Kalpana Gadekar at BKC police station.

Interestingly, Kusum Waghmare, Police Inspector, has been given the additional charge of Mahim police station.

The list also includes encounter specialist Lad who managed to arrest Ravi Bora alias DK Rao, a dreaded gangster, in a fierce shootout in Juhu. In 1996, the then Police Sub Inspector, Lad was informed that DK Rao and his accomplice were to commit a dacoity in Juhu and set a trap. A bullet round was fired at Lad which missed and Lad fired back. The bullet hit Rao, who was injured. As the gangsters tried to flee, Lad managed to nab the injured Rao.

Deven Bharti, Joint Commissioner of Police for Law and Order, said, "We are proud to have senior female officers as in-charges of police stations in the city. All the police officers are deserving and we are proud to claim that Mumbai police department has the highest number of female police officers as in-charge of the police stations."

"All these police stations are challenging ones and the female officers have shown their dedication and professional skills in carrying out their duties," said Datta Padsalgikar, Mumbai Police Commissioner.
