75-year-old man died of road accident in Panvel

A 75-year-old man died in a road accident, after he was hit by a four wheeler on the old Mumbai-Pune Highway on Wednesday. The accident took place around 10 am, near Chikle village in Panvel.

According to the police, Dharma Patil was crossing the road to reach the other side of the village, when he was hit by the car that was coming to Mumbai from Khalapur. Patil suffered severe injuries on his head and other parts of his body in the accident.

"A few local residents of the area rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he breathe his last upon reaching there," said a police officer from Panvel city police station.

"The deceased's body was delivered to his family after a post-mortem was conducted in Panvel rural hospital. The reports of autopsy are yet to come," said the officer.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested the driver, Vishwajeet Katkare, 30, from the spot. He has been booked under sections 279, 304a, 237, 238 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 184 of the Motor Vehicle Act.

"Prima facie it appeared that the accused lost his control on his vehicle when he hit the deceased. We don't think that he was under the influence of alcohol when then accident took place," said another police officer.
