7-year-old, tethered to be set ablaze in shanty, rescued

Kumbharwada slum dwellers rescued a seven-year-old boy, identified only as Shahid, who was set ablaze in a shanty late on Friday morning. According to the police, when the locals saw smoke coming out of one of the huts, they rushed to douse the fire and spotted the minor with his hands and legs tied. The residents immediately rushed Shahid to Indira Gandhi hospital and informed the Bhiwandi police. The police added that after the first-aid, he was transferred to the civil hospital and has suffered 36% burns on both hands and legs and chest and lower abdomen. However, except his name, other crucial details about the boy remains unknown.

Naresh Puttapaka, 26, who rescued Shahid, said, "I saw the smoke coming out and I informed others. We ran with buckets of water to douse it. Along with other locals, I went inside to see if there was anyone caught inside, but I was shocked to see that a young boy was tied with a rope was burning. I immediately covered him with a blanket."

NT Rode, senior police inspector, said, "We went to the spot and have questioned the nearby slum dwellers. In primary investigation, we found that the boy is from Mumbai and that the tenants had vacated the room a night earlier. We are investigating and we will take the statement of the boy and will register a case."
