Recession continues to dog the deputy regional transport office (RTO) Vashi, as the registration of imported vehicles have dropped by a sharp 50% in the current fiscal.

And, even the Diwali festival did not bring cheer, as it witnessed around 25% less vehicle registration compared to last year.

Diwali is the time, when people buy new vehicles as the day is considered auspicious. But this Diwali was as auspicious as for deputy RTO Vashi compared to last few years. The latest data of vehicles registration in the satellite city shows that recession has drastically hit the deputy RTO’s revenue generation.

In the first six months of 2012, a total 14 imported vehicles were registered at the RTO Vashi while in 2013, only seven vehicles were registered in the corresponding period. The RTO charges 20% of the vehicle cost as its registration fee.

“The RTO generates good revenue through registration of imported vehicles as the cost of these vehicles is more than Rs1 crore,” said Sanjay Dhaygude, deputy RTO Vashi.

The registration of cars in Diwali festival has also dropped this year. Last Diwali, a total 1,732 cars were registered while this Diwali saw only 1,334 car registrations. “The huge drop in registration of cars has also affected in the revenue generation,” added Dhaygude.

However, there has been no major drop in the registration of motorbikes; only 122 less motorbikes were registered this Diwali. Last year during Diwali, a total 2,537 motorbikes were registered while in this Diwali it was 2,415.

In the current fiscal, the RTO is far behind from meeting its target revenue generation. Till the end October, it had generated Rs97 crore, while the total target has been set for Rs224 crore. In the first six months the total number of vehicles registered at deputy RTO, Vashi is 16,304 (all vehicles).

Meanwhile, Panvel deputy RTO has generated a good revenue as 8,074 cars were registered in the first seven months of the current fiscal. The deputy RTO office data reveals that around 7,318 cars individually owned and 756 company-owned cars have been registered during this period.

According to a RTO official, the local body tax (LBT) has affected the revenue of the deputy RTO Vashi, as vehicle owners are approaching deputy RTO, Panvel to register their new vehicles.
Vehicle owners have to pay 3% LBT while registering their vehicles in deputy RTO, Vashi.

Dhaygude said, “If a vehicle is registered at the Vashi office, the owner has to pay 3% LBT. However, there is no LBT applicable if the vehicle is registered with the deputy RTO, Panvel.”
