With just seven days left for the deadline, set by the Governor, to declare all the results at the University of Mumbai, over 30 per cent of the evaluation work is still left be completed. Over 6 lakh answer sheets are yet to be evaluated. This makes it next to impossible for the university to declare results before July 31.

"Going by the current situation, at least 1 lakh papers have to be evaluated on a daily basis. As per the current rate, close to 60,000 papers are evaluated every day," said a senior official from the university. The university has now announced non-instructional days from Monday to Thursday for all the students under its departments and affiliated colleges and has also asked it's teachers to work for at least 6 hours at the assessment centres every day for the next four days.

'Disciplinary action shall be taken against teachers who are appointed as examiners/moderators who do not report to the CAP (Centralised Assessment Process) centres and who do not put in at least 6 hours a day," states a circular issued by the university on Saturday.

Students who are planning to pursue higher education either abroad or in other universities are meanwhile worried about losing out on a year as the semester in most universities begins in August-September. "I am worried that the university where I have applied might withdraw the offer due to a delay in submitting the mark sheet due to the result chaos," said a student who is selected for an MS course in the UK.

Meanwhile, teachers are skeptical if the non-instructional days will actually serve any purpose. "In our centre, 100 teachers are registered with only 50-60 computers. How can all the teachers evaluate papers at the same time," questioned a teacher.

RACE AGAINST TIME

  • This year, for the first time, the university has decided to conduct evaluation through the onscreen method. The total number of answer sheets to be evaluated are over 18 lakh.
