A 65-year-old convicted prisoner committed suicide inside Taloja jail on Sunday evening. The deceased has been identified as Yashwant Khodke, from Sainapur village in Beed.

According to the police, Khodke was arrested on charges of dowry harassment, filed by his wife, following which he was convicted by court and sent to Taloja jail to complete his sentence. He was shifted to Taloja jail on June 1.

The jail authorities said the incident occurred after 4.30pm. Khodke had gone to the toilet at the time and hanged himself with the pyjama string of his uniform. After some time, when there was no response, the jail staff broke open the door and found him hanging.  No suicide note was found, the police said.

No external injuries were found on the body, which was immediately sent to nearby hospital for a post-mortem. A case of suicide was registered by the Khargar police station.

Preliminary investigations suggest that ever since Khodke’s wife had filed a dowry harassment case against him, he was under tremendous depression, police said.
