A 65-year-old Bolivian national, who works as a professor of Arts in Bolivia, was arrested by sleuths from Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) recently for allegedly possessing 2.4 kg cocaine. The senior citizen wanted a computer and was in need for money. A Bolivian woman known to him offered to give him 4000 USD if he smuggled cocaine to Mumbai. The professor agreed to work as a courier but was caught with the contraband at the international airport.

The arrested professor has been identified as Colqua Desiderio Gutienrrez.

According to NCB sources, on receipt of specific information, Gutinerrez was apprehended at the international airport on his arrival. Inspection of his belonging resulted in seizure of cocaine. He was then taken into custody and was booked under sections of Narcotics Drug and Psychotropic Substances Act.

"During interrogation Gutienrrez revealed that his wife had died a few years ago and his two children had been staying away from him. Gutienrrez wanted a computer since all his colleagues had one. Through a common friend he came across a woman who promised to give him 4000 USD if he would take her parcel to Mumbai, and Gutienrrez agreed to work as a courier," said an NCB official, privy to the investigation.

The official added that the Bolivian woman supplier had given a contact number of a Mumbai-based receiver to Gutienrrez.

"When we dialled the number a couple of times, the person using it probably got suspicious and has switched it off. The probe revealed that the SIM was procured using bogus documents. Gutienrrez had boarded a flight from Bolivia to Sau Paulo in Brazil and then came to Mumbai via Addis Ababa. This is a different route that the courier has taken, as normally people smuggling contraband come to India via Dubai," said the official.

In June 2017, NCB officials had arrested Bolivian national Melgar De Claudia (38), who flew in by Ethiopian Airlines with 3.25 kg cocaine worth Rs 21 crore on her person.
