Quality of education at civic-run schools is set to get better from next year. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has decided to set up practical laboratories in 300 schools and computer labs in as many schools by March, said Vinod Shelar, chairman of the civic education committee.

The education committee has asked the headmasters of BMC-run schools to provide information about conked-out computers and lack of equipment in their science labs.

"I found that many schools of our schools don't have labs, and even if some of them have labs, they lack equipment. We are planning to set up about 300 new laboratories for science practicals and about 300 computer rooms. There are PCs in some schools but they require maintenance," said Shelar, adding that the labs will be ready by March.

The civic body is also looking for teachers with knowledge of computers. "In some schools the labs are lying idle as there are no teachers," said Shelar. The civic body has roped in 90 teachers to teacher computer in 90 schools.

"We are shuffling teachers who are tech-savvy so that their knowledge can be used properly. We will also provide internet connection to these schools."
