Six Volvo buses are gathering dust at Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) depots in the city on account of a disagreement the transport utility had with the contractor. BEST committee member Rajesh Kusle admitted this at the budget meeting on Friday.

The six buses were procured on trial basis five years ago, but aren't being used anymore. "The BEST had procured these buses into their fleet around five to six years ago. The contractor was to get advertising rights on bus stops. But since three years, they are lying at our depots," Kusle said.

Officials said they were taken off the roads following issues between the contractor and BEST, but added that they would soon be back on the roads. The contractor, however, is continuing to use advertising spaces, Kusle said.

The BEST is currently planning to increase its fleet from 3,337 buses to 4,050 buses by March 2020. They intend to procure 450 buses on wet lease, and the remaining under various other schemes. These also include AC buses. "We have hitherto seen that AC buses have been a bane, a loss-making deal. Reintroducing them is of little use," said Suhas Samant, BEST Committee member.

The committee members also criticised the wet lease scheme, as they feel it would result in further losses.
