#BMCElections: 6 reasons why your vote MATTERS

Today is the day you go and cast your vote to choose the next civic administration to run the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). 

The BMC elections get as much coverage as a state or national-level election for several reasons. In 2012, reports suggest that 45 per cent of the city turned out to vote. According to data provided by Operation Black Dot, these are the reasons

1)  Mumbai’s size: Mumbai is India’s second biggest city based on population after Delhi. As of 2016, Mumbai had 20.6 million people living in it, making it the sixth most populated city in the world

2)  GDP: Mumbai is South Asia’s richest city, based on GDP and it generates 6.16 per cent of India’s GDP

3)  Mumbai has the largest urban primary education system in Asia run by the BMC

While these numbers look good for the city, here are reasons why your vote matters

1) You can choose a civic administration that helps curb noise pollution levels. Currently, Mumbai is second after New Delhi

2) You can choose a civic administration that helps reduce pollution levels. Currently the air quality in Mumbai swings between ‘poor’ and ‘very poor’, as per air pollution standards.

3) You can choose a civic administration that restores walking spaces and footpaths

4) You can choose a civic administration that ensures everyone gets proper water supply and electricity

5) You can choose a civic administration that ensures that the city gets a green cover

6) You can choose a civic administration that ensures that you get open spaces
