Six women candidates aspiring to join the Mumbai Police force fell unconscious while giving a running test on Saturday. As a part of the recruitment process to join the force, candidates are required to pass several necessary tests to qualify themselves to get selected.

The candidates were identified as Renuka Gaikwad (24), Pratiksha Vadve (21), Manisha Munde (22), Geeta Ghodke (24), Sarita Tade (25) and Manda Khandare (26).

According to the police, around 10am, candidates were asked to run 800-metres — from Bhandup bus stop to Kanjurmarg bus stop close to Eastern Express Highway — in order to clear the physical test.

After running some distance, some of the candidates began to feel exhausted and due to scorching heat, six candidates collapsed. While Khandare was admitted to Rajawadi hospital, others were taken to a general hospital in Mulund. All of them were discharged after receiving medical treatment.

However, this is not the first instance where this type of medical crisis had taken place. In June 2014, four aspirants lost their lives while completing a 5-km run in order to clear physical test. They reportedly died due to multiple organs failure, exhaustion and heat stroke.

The recruitment process, especially the running part, was criticised by the aspirants due to the tedious and tiring routine of running continuously in scorching heat.

The then Mumbai police commissioner, Rakesh Maria had ordered a Crime Branch probe into the case where it was decided that before the run the candidate's blood pressure and heart beats screening needed to be checked.

Speaking over the matter, Anup Kumar Singh, joint commissioner of police (administration) said, "Observing the previous deaths and medical crisis, the recruitment process has been made more convenient and flexible for the aspiring candidates. As per the new rules, women candidates shall run a distance of 800-meters and male candidate shall run a distance of 1,600-meters. However, if the candidate who is not prepared for the test physically and medically runs, then the possibility for such accidents increases. We have such aspirants suffering from asthma coming forward to run. As per the latest records, we have 5,000 women officers being selected into the police but some candidates who don't prepare themselves for the test face such problems. Since we understand the problems faced by the candidates in the heat, we have also made preparations from our sides so that we could avoid such accidents in future. During the test, we have a team of doctors, water and medical facilities and tents for sick candidates."
