Six residents of Shahu Nagar in Mahim (East) were injured after a portion of a 10,000-litre water tank collapsed on two slums on Sunday morning. Fire brigade officials rushed to the spot and rescued the residents, two of whom are recuperating at the BMC-run Sion hospital.
Dr Avinash Supe, dean of LTMG Sion Hospital, said that six patients were brought to the hospital, of which four were given first aid and allowed to go home. "Out of the six patients brought to us, we hospitalised two. Rampant Bhoir, 43, sustained a pelvic fracture, multiple abrasions and was in a state of shock. He was taken for emergency surgery and his condition remains critical. Rahul Patil, 17, who was also admitted, is stable and has blunt trauma to the chest. He is under observation."
According to locals, the tank was in a dilapidated condition and water supply from it had stopped a few months ago. "The tank could have collapsed any day. We had informed the BMC about the issue. Even Shiv Sena MP Rahul Shewale had visited the site and promised us action few months ago, but after that, there has not been no progress," a resident said.
Shewale said that the tank was under repair and the incident was a result of negligence on the part of the contractor appointed by the building construction department for the repair work. "I have spoken to the municipal commissioner and have asked him to initiate strict action against the contractor," he said.
Deputy commissioner of police Mahesh Patil of zone V, said, "We will first investigate the issue and after that we will take action."
