The Social Service Branch (SSB) of the city police on Tuesday arrested a 54-year-old man who had written a letter to a Vadodara resident claiming he has obscene photographs and videos of his daughter, who is a student in Mumbai, and tried to extort Rs1.84 crore from him. The arrested person has been identified as Nayan Jadhav.

In the last week of August, a businessman from Vadodara and his daughter had met joint commissioner of police (crime) Sadanand Date and told him that a man unknown to them was trying to blackmail them.

The victim said he had received a letter from an unknown person who claimed that he had obscene photos and videos of his daughter and demanded Rs1.84 crore to sell it to the victim. The letter also stated that if the victim didn't pay up, he'd upload the photos and videos on the internet. The victim and his daughter were under tremendous mental stress, police said. The enforcement department's SSB was then entrusted with the task of tracing the culprit.

"In the letter, the culprit had directed the victim to keep the bag containing cash at the fourth-floor gallery of Ganesh Niwas building in Oshiwara. However, the victim went to the mentioned place in Oshiwara and dropped a letter there which stated he was unable to pay such a huge amount," said additional commissioner of police, KMM Prasanna.

Thereafter, the accused started making phone calls on the victim's mobile phone from different numbers, which were being made from different public call offices.

As per the police's instructions, SSB assistant inspector Sudhakar Deshmukh's contact number was given to the accused, informing him that Deshmukh was a relative of the victim and he would be the one arranging for the money.

"The accused then started calling inspector Deshmukh for money. After gaining the caller's trust, the police convinced him to take a token of Rs4 lakh at a bus stop near Lotus petrol pump at New Link Road in Jogeshwari (W) on Tuesday. The police had stuffed paper bundles in the bag and laid a trap at the said place. The accused, later identified as Nayan Jadhav, was held once he arrived at the spot," said deputy commissioner of police, enforcement, Pravin Patil.

"Jadhav told the police that he had found the victim's daughter's purse unattended on the road, and it contained her driving licence which had her residential address. Since Jadhav was in need of money he thought of extorting the girl's family by claiming he had her obscene photographs and videos," said senior inspector Shirish Sawant of SSB.

Jadhav has been booked under section 385 (putting person in fear of injury in order to commit extortion), 354A (stalking), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 500 (defamation) of the Indian Penal Code.
