In a freak incident, a man, as he was witnessing his property get reduced to ashes in a fire, suffered a heart attack which resulted in his death. The incident took place in Dadar (West) on Sunday morning.

The deceased, identified as 50-year-old Ramesh Vichare, was standing in the crowd when the two-storey building, Pradhan Bhavan, in Dadar caught fire.

According to the police, around 7.10 am, a fire took place inside Pradhan Bhavan. There were around 10 rooms in the building, of which three were reportedly used by one Darekar family.

"The other rooms were rented as godowns for the shopkeepers in the periphery. Ramesh Vichare who resided in Dadar (East), had a godown in the building and rushed to Pradhan Bhavan immediately after learning about the fire. Vichare was standing in the crowd and witnessing the fire fighting operations when he suddenly collapsed. He was taken to KEM hospital where he was declared dead," said Assistant Commissioner of Police, Sunil Deshmukh.

"As per the post-mortem report, Vichare died of a heart attack. Vichare was most probably too shocked to see his godown on fire and got the attack. The cause of fire is still being investigated," added Deshmukh.

Although the fire was doused within an hour, the 10 rooms in the building were completely gutted. Arun Darekar, a 58-year-old resident of the building, suffered minor burn injuries. The building was partly commercial and partly residential.
