It was a heart-wrenching experience for 70-year-old Leonard A Britto, when a coconut tree in his society, brought by his father 50 years ago, was trimmed much more than he expected, that too without BMC's permission. Since then, he has complained to both the BMC and police. However, the civic body has turned a deaf ear to his complaint.

"The tree was of sentimental value to me," said Britto, who resides in the Man-Mar co-operative housing society in Santa Cruz (West). The tree was trimmed at the behest of Grennell Pereira, the treasurer of the same society, who called in three labourers for the job.

Britto recalled, "I only realised what he was upto when I saw that fresh leaves had been chopped." When he asked Pereira whose permission he had taken, he got a reply that the society's general secretary and chairman had approved the same.

Pereira said, "We did not ask the BMC for permission as trimming of a tree can be done upto 6 inches." However, pictures show that the leaves themselves are 6 feet long, indicating a violation of the rule.
Britto sent a written complaint to the BMC and the Santacruz police station on November 10. However, the civic body hasn't responded.

A BMC official from the department of gardens said, "We will provide the police with proper documentation and they will take the necessary action."
