This Valentine's Day, love will literally be in the air for the Cawascamas and Desais, who are among the 50 lucky elderly couples who will be flying over the Mumbai harbour on Thursday.
It’s time to head to the agiary for prayers. Grant Road resident Aban Cawascama, 61, gives her hair a final brush and calls out to her husband, “Kersey let’s go. We’ll be late.”
Aban lovingly pats his shoulder and says, “Both of us have been excited since we found out about our helicopter Valentine date. This is our first such ride.”
Kersey was introduced to the concept of Valentine’s Day only after marriage, 35 years ago. He says, “We always limited the celebrations to quiet dinners at home, but this one is going to be very special.”
In Matunga Road, the Desai household is abuzz with the same excitement. “We last went on a chopper ride in 2010 when we were visiting my son in Australia. It’s really great to be out with my husband like this again,” 62-year-old Ashwina Desai says, giggling like a schoolgirl.
Her husband Ramanlal, 70, is also looking forward to it. “Just because we are old, it’s not like the idea of romance doesn’t excite us as much as it does the young,” says Ramanlal. The Desais have been married for 42 years.

K Ravi of Media Link & Events Management, the company organising the outing, told DNA, “The senior couples will be joined by young couples later at the Gateway of India in an open air double-decker. This will be followed by dinner on a cruise.”
He added, “We want them to feel young again and revive beautiful memories.”
