The Kandivali police have rounded up atleast 20 suspects for questioning to investigate the brutal rape of the 5-year-old girl in Saibaba Nagar. The suspects, all from the same locality, are being made to parade before the girl and her mother for positive identification, said the police. However, the police are yet to make any arrests in the case.

The CCTV footage, which the police shared with the media, is unclear and does not show the face of the accused. It faintly shows a man walking with the child, said the police.

"We have formed teams for questioning the suspects from across the city who are known to the victim's family. On Monday, we took another suspect into custody. We will be questioning him and asking the child to identify," said an officer.

The police said that the victim's mother has been changing statements about the identity of the accused. "We are yet to take statements of the child as she is recuperating in the hospital," said Balsingh Rajput, DCP of zone 11.

The child, who lived on a footpath with her mother and brother at Saibaba Nagar, was abducted around 3am on Wednesday. The police suspect her attacker was someone who resides in the same neighbourhood. The next morning, the girl's mother found her crying and bleeding on the footpath and rushed her to the BMC-run Kandivali Shatabdi Hospital.

When her condition worsened, she was shifted to Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central.

According to doctors, a sweeping broom was inserted one foot deep into the girl's vagina. Her vagina and rectum were severely mutilated and she lost a lot of blood. One unit of blood was transfused during the surgery. The infected parts were cleaned and a colostomy was performed for which an incision was made in her abdomen to facilitate the passing of stool and urine, said doctors. She is currently out of danger.

"The patient has undergone surgeries to mitigate her condition. She will require another surgery in the next three months. As of now she will be recuperating in the hospital for the next three weeks. Her condition is stable. However, rehabilitating her will have to be handled carefully. Our counsellors and psychiatrists will take up rehabilitation issues," said the dean of BYL Nair Hospital Dr Ramesh Bharmal.
