After ignoring the sexual identity of their child due to poverty, the family of five-year-old Ayman Khan has finally taken him to a hospital for a genital reconstruction surgery. The five-year-old Beed resident underwent a genital reconstruction surgery on Friday at state-run St George Hospital in Fort.
The child was born with male genitals but exhibited female characteristics. The family could family consider a reconstruction surgery after the hospital extended a helping hand.
The surgery went on for three hours. Doctors say, the child will be on liquid diet for a couple of days and will be discharged on Saturday.
Akbar Shaikh, the child's uncle, said, "He was moved to the general ward after a three-hour-long surgery. The doctors are yet to give us details about the precautions needed to be taken after the surgery. So far, the hospital hasn't charged us anything."
Ayman had to get a few medical check ups done on Thursday after which the doctor decided to operate him on Friday.
Usually, the cost of the surgery goes up to around Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh. Dr Madhurkar Gaikwad, medical superintendent of the hospital, said, "The right testicle was operated today and the one in the left side will be operated after a few months."
Before going under the knife, he underwent a few tests in which the Karyotyping report stated Ayman is a male child.
Dr Rajat Kapoor, a plastic surgeon, said, "This was a minor surgery. The main surgery will be done after two to three months. In this, we made a conduit to help him to urinate like a male."
