The Kharghar police have arrested five persons, including the brother of a politician for assaulting Daily News & Analysis (DNA) journalist Sudhir Suryawanshi and his friend Santosh Fatate. The police claimed that a housing society dispute was the reason behind the assault.

Those arrested were Panvel residents Mayur Krushna Thakur, 30, a resident of Kalpataru CHS; farmer Ananta Tukaram Kathara, 26; Ashok Jagannath Bhoir, 30; and building material suppliers Akash Krushna Patil, 24, and Vishwas Atmaram Kathara, 30.

"We have arrested the five under Indian Penal Code Sections 326 for causing grievous hurt by means of dangerous weapons and 34 for common intention," said Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale.

The five were produced before a local court in Navi Mumbai, which remanded them in police custody till April 5.

"Thakur stays in the same housing complex where I reside and he is the relative of a politician. I do not know why they assaulted me. The manner in which they have assaulted me, they should have been charged with attempt to commit murder, instead of causing grievous hurt," said Suryawanshi.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Nitin Kausadikar said: "We had got CCTV footages from five places, in which the attackers were captured. One of the CCTV footages from Kalpataru Society revealed that the attackers had followed the car in which Suryawanshi and Thatate were travelling on two motorcycles on March 31."

Another police officer said that Thakur is the brain behind the attack. "Some people said that Suryawanshi and Thakur had some dispute regarding the society election, which happened a month ago and had some arguments in the past. We have to verify this with Suryawanshi. After the attack, the accused persons fled to different places. We first nabbed Kathara, who then exposed the others."

What happened

On March 31, between 12.30 pm and 1 pm, Suryawanshi and Thatate were attacked by five persons when they came to Kharghar for some private work in the latter's car. The attackers first punctured the tyres of the car and then bashed up Suryawanshi and Thatate with baseball bats. The assailants then fled the spot on their motorcycles. While Thatate has been discharged, Suryawanshi is still in hospital.
