The Mulund police on Saturday arrested five men for allegedly gang-raping a 40-year-old ragpicker in Mulund (West) on Friday night.
Inspector Ravidutt Sawant said, “Ajay Gechand, 20, Mahesh Maragaje alias Babu, 28, Wasim Sheikh alias Salman, 20, Wahid Khan alias Kalu, 24, and Dastigar Khan alias Imran, 20, were booked for gang rape, kidnapping woman to compel her to marriage, wrongful confinement, unnatural sex, criminal conspiracy and voluntarily causing hurt.”

The victim had arrived in Mumbai from Marathwada a few months ago and had been working as a ragpicker in Amar Nagar since then. She, too, stayed on the footpath there.
On Friday night, when she was returning to her shelter, two motorcycle-borne men accosted her. Threatening her of dire consequences if she tried to resist, they took her to an empty truck parked by the roadside and raped her. Later, she was dragged to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park area behind Amar Nagar and was raped by three more people. They all also had unnatural sex with her and beat her up.
However, mustering courage, the victim reached the Mulund police station on Saturday morning to file a complaint of gang rape. The police recorded her statement and registered a case against the accused, added Sawant.
