When students of Thane's ITI (Industrial Training Institute) at Ramnagar went to attend college after their Diwali vacation, they were surprised to learn that more than 475 students had failed in one subject in a semester exam held in August. The angry students approached the college principal for a re-evaluation, threatening to go on a hunger strike from next week. The principal of the institute has said that since the results were not fully declared yet, students should wait and not panic.

Sameer Pandey (name changed), a student from ITI, Ramnagar, Wagle estate in Thane west was at loss for words on Thursday when he learnt that he had failed a subject in the fourth semester exam held in August 2016. "We were given these excel sheets on November 17 which had our roll calls, name, marks and whether we have passed or failed," he said. "Majority of students from my class have failed, which seems unbelievable," he added.

More than 700 students study at Thane's ITI. The affected students tried reaching the college principal S M Upasani on Thursday, but claimed she was not reachable. "We approached the school management on Friday and the principal Mr Upasani said that there was some problem in the system at Delhi. He assured that the paper will be sent for re-evaluation and asked us to wait till Monday. If the problem is not rectified then we will go on a hunger strike on November 27," said another student.

When contacted on the issue, S M Upasani said that the results were declared from Delhi and only a partial list had been declared. "The list consists names of repeaters who appeared for first, third and fourth semesters. The entire list has not been declared yet and I asked students not to panic," said Upasani. "In certain cases we can also give grace marks to those who have failed. So please do not panic," he added.

He, however, advised that instead of going for re-evaluation, the students should reappear for the exams. He said that since the ITI exams have been centralised two years back, there have been delays in the results of the students. "If they go for re-evaluation the results would anyway come pretty late. It is better they reappear for the exams in February and before that if they get their re-evaluated marksheet and they have passed, they can withdraw from the February exams. Otherwise they will lose a year," he added.
