Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislator Kiran Pawaskar on Friday alleged steep increase in number of corruption cases in government. Backing it with figures, he said in the last six months, the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) caught 475 government employees, mostly from revenue and police departments, while accepting bribes. "Most of them hail from chief minister Devendra Fadnavis's own constituency," he stressed.

Referring to the CM's statement that "neither he himself would indulge in corruption, nor would he allow anyone to do so", Pawaskar dared Fadnavis to take action against him if the proofs submitted by him turned out to be false.

"If the documents provided by us are genuine, then what is stopping him (Fadnavis) from taking action in the matter. Government employees... are indulging in corruption in the belief that their own ministers are indulging in alleged corruption," he said.

Pawaskar further alleged that there was large-scale corruption in MLAs' Local Area Development Funds, something that has shaken the confidence of people in the legislature.

Taking part in the inconclusive two-day debate over alleged corruption allegations against some ministers in the legislative council, Pawaskar disclosed that MLAs and MLCs get Rs2 crore each as development funds, while MPs get Rs5 crore each.

"There are rules and regulations laid down for utilisation of these development funds. There is no e-tendering required in carrying out works worth Rs3 lakh. In the due procedure, the MLA submits a proposal to the collector, who then issues cheques to Labour societies. In this process, 12% of the amount is deducted as government taxes before the funds are released to the abour societies. After that the labour societies deduct 14% taxes. They then issue cheques to the contractor, who cuts 10% as his profit. So, 34% of the total amount goes in taxes and profits," he said.

Pawaskar alleged that 50 per cent of the development fund allocation goes into corruption in the system.
