While 274 people died on the Mumbai-Pune expressway. The Mumbai-Goa highway reported 614 accidents in which 126 persons died while the Thane-Nashik highway claimed 100 lives. A total number of 4,107 accidents were reported on state highways of which 1,089 people died. Compared to 2015, statistics revealed that 13,685 accidents were recorded on state highways which claimed 2,262 lives.

After highway traffic police informed NHAI about the 45 blind spots, the department in order to curb mishaps began installing signages and increasing the width of the road last month.

"We have shared the information with the NHAI and Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation about the blind spots and we will keep conducting surveys to lessen the number of accidents," said a senior officer from the state highway traffic police department.

A spokesperson from NHAI said, "The work on blind spots have begun and we have managed to bring down the accident and death rates on NH 8. Major accidents have taken place from Vasai to Palghar and towards the entrances of major cities."
